Overview
This workshop is devoted to refactoring Macaulay2’s C++ engine. It continues the work begun at The Future of Macaulay2 workshop, led by Michael Burr and Mike Stillman and held at Georgia Tech in May 2026, where participants mapped out directions for modernizing the system’s architecture.
Participants will work directly on engine internals, so this is a workshop for people comfortable reading and writing C++ and building Macaulay2 from source.
Prerequisites
- A working build of Macaulay2 from source, set up before arrival.
- Familiarity with C++ and with the layout of the engine source tree.
- A GitHub account, for opening pull requests against Macaulay2/M2.

Travel and lodging
Lodging is arranged and paid for directly by Cornell — participants do not need to book their own rooms.
Travel is booked by participants and reimbursed afterward, so go ahead and make your arrangements.
You can fly all the way in to Ithaca Tompkins International Airport (ITH), a few miles from campus, but scheduled service is limited to two nonstop routes: Delta to New York (JFK) and United to Washington Dulles (IAD). Connecting through one of those two is the only way to land in Ithaca itself.
Syracuse (SYR) is the usual alternative and has far more flights. It is about 60 miles from Ithaca — roughly an hour and fifteen minutes by car — and from there you can rent a car, take an Uber, or ride the OurBus shuttle, which runs from the airport terminal to the Cornell campus.
Keep your receipts and boarding passes. Meals are covered by per diem, which is also reimbursed, so meal receipts are not required.
